Work-Study Program (Alternance)
What Is Alternance?
Stellum International offers students the opportunity to study through the French “alternance” system, also known as an apprenticeship pathway.
Alternance combines academic study with professional work experience in a company. Students alternate between attending classes and working in a professional role related to their field of study. This allows students to gain valuable industry experience while completing their degree.
One of the major advantages of alternance is that tuition fees are typically covered through the apprenticeship system, while students also receive a salary from their employer. It is an excellent pathway for students who want to strengthen their employability, build professional networks, and gain real-world experience during their studies.
At Stellum International, students following the alternance pathway in the MSc International Project Management programme also benefit from:
- Internationally focused teaching in English
- Additional professional certifications
- Industry-oriented projects and workshops
- Opportunities to work with leading companies in France
- International study trips and collaborations
Students may apply for an apprenticeship position during either the first or second year of the programme.
Important Information for International Students
International students should note that apprenticeship opportunities in France can be competitive. In most cases, students are expected to have been resident in France for at least one year before becoming fully eligible and competitive for apprenticeship recruitment.
A B2 level of French is also highly recommended, as many companies require professional communication skills in French, even when studying in an English-taught programme.
To support international students, Stellum International includes French language classes as part of the student experience to help improve integration, confidence, and employability in the French job market.
Alternance in France is built on two main types of contracts: the Contrat d’Apprentissage and the Contrat de Professionnalisation. Both allow students to combine academic learning with valuable work experience, but they cater to slightly different needs.
The Contrat d’Apprentissage is ideal for students between the ages of 16 and 29. It is designed to lead to a nationally recognized diploma or title, such as a BTS, Licence, or Master’s degree. This contract typically lasts between six months and three years, depending on the program. One major advantage is that tuition fees are often fully covered by the employer, and students receive a monthly salary, which varies according to their age and level of study.
The Contrat de Professionnalisation, or Professionalization Contract, is intended for young people aged 16 to 25 as well as job seekers aged 26 and above. It focuses on developing practical, job-ready skills and often leads to a professional qualification or certificate. Typically lasting between 6 to 12 months (and renewable), this contract is designed to facilitate a quicker and smoother transition into the job market. Professionalism includes traits like punctuality, respect, responsibility, and communication. It means being organized, taking initiative, and handling tasks with integrity. It also involves dressing appropriately, managing your time well, and maintaining a positive and collaborative attitude. In essence, professionalism reflects your readiness to become a valued team member—not just a student or intern.
